Why Did Affleck Hide the Fact His Ancestor Was a Slave Owner?

Actor Ben Affleck finally spoke out about the news that his ancestor was a slave owner. The information was revealed as part of Finding Your Roots show and PBS said it would internally probe the revelation. PBS wants to make sure all the editorial standards were followed, they said.

"I didn't want any television show about my family to include a guy who owned slaves," Affleck wrote on his Facebook page. "I was embarrassed. The very thought left a bad taste in my mouth." He added that it is crucial to bear in mind that Finding Your Roots is not a news program, but a show where a person reveals a lot of information about his family. This, says Affleck, makes a person very vulnerable.

He continued by saying he regrets his move to prevent the revelation from being aired.  "While I don't like that the guy is an ancestor, I am happy that aspect of our country's history is being talked about," he wrote.

The news came out with leaked emails between Finding Your Roots host Henry Louis Gates and Sony chief executive Michael Lynton, where Lynton was asked what can be done given it was the first time a participant of the show asked for information to be cut out.

So far it is known that the information did not make the cut. The show focused on Affleck's Revolutionary War ancestor and a 3rd great-grandfather who was an occult enthusiast.
